Treat Erectile Dysfunction
What is Erection?
An erection is a course of action in which the penis becomes hard due
to more blood flow. Erection begins with sensory or mental stimulation,
or both. Impulses from the brain and local nerves cause the muscles of
the corpora cavernosa to relax, allowing blood to flow in and fill the
spaces. Erections may happen in response to bodily or exciting motivation.
Erection enables sexual intercourse and helps an individual perform other
sexual activities as well.

How does an Erection occur?
The penis contains two chambers called the corpora cavernosa, which run
the length of the organ. When a man becomes aroused, the arteries leading
into the penis open up so that pressurized blood can enter corpora cavernosa
quickly.
- An erection is an involuntary reaction in response to sexual stimulation
and excitement.
- Sexual stimulation and excitement cause the brain, nerves, the heart,
blood vessels, and hormones to work together to produce a rapid increase
in the amount of blood flowing to the penis.
- The blood becomes trapped and held in the two spongy chambers in the
shaft of the penis.
- As the chambers rapidly fill with blood, they expand, and the penis
becomes firm and elongated.
- The result is an erection.
What is Erectile Dysfunction?
According to Kidney and Urologic Diseases Home website, Erectile Dysfunction
(ED), sometimes called "impotence,"
is the repeated inability to get or keep an erection firm enough for sexual
intercourse. The word "impotence" may also be used to describe
other problems that interfere with sexual intercourse and reproduction,
such as lack of sexual desire and problems with ejaculation or orgasm.
Using the term erectile
dysfunction makes it clear that those other problems are not involved.
Treatment of Erectile Dysfunction
Treatment depends on the cause. Erectile Dysfunction can be treated by
three types
- Drug Therapy
- Psychotherapy
- Vacuum Devices
Drug Therapy
The prescription PDE5 inhibitors sildenafil (Viagra®),
vardenafil (Levitra®) and tadalafil (Cialis®)
are prescription drugs which are taken orally. They work by blocking the
action of PDE5, which causes cGMP to degrade; cGMP causes the smooth muscle
of the arteries in the penis to relax, allowing the corpora cavernosa
to fill with blood.
Psychotherapy
Experts often treat psychologically based ED using techniques that reduce
the nervousness associated with sexual intercourse. The patient's spouse
can help with the techniques, which include steady development of confidence
and motivation. Such techniques also can help reduce nervousness when
ED is being treated by psychotherapy.
Vacuum Devices
Automatic vacuum procedure causes erection by creating a partial space,
which allows smooth flow of blood into the penis, engorging and increasing
it. That vacuum devices have three apparatus:
- A plastic cylinder, into which the penis is placed;
- A pump, which draws air out of the cylinder;
- An elastic band, which is placed around the base of the penis to maintain
the erection after the cylinder is removed and during intercourse by
preventing blood from flowing back into the body.
- One variation of the vacuum device involves a semirigid rubber cover
that is placed on the penis and leftovers there after erection is attained
and during sexual intercourse.
