Diet Pill Rimonabant To Rule The Market In 2010

Thu, 29 March 2007

Diet pill Rimonabant (Acomplia / Zimulti), which is stalled by the FDA, will be a clinical benchmark for treating obese or overweight people in 2010 and will replace prescription drug Xenical as the top selling diet drug, said a major research firm, Decision Resources, Inc.

According to its recent report, Rimonabant despite its side effects of anxiety and depression in some patients will replace prescription drug Xenical (orlistat) from the top slot.

The firm had surveyed more than 3,000 endocrinologists with years of experience behind them. It also referred its own analysis and reports of the major clinical attributes of current and emerging obesity therapies.

Nancy Li, analyst with Decision Resources, said Acomplia has many benefits like weight reduction, cardiovascular benefits, greater waist size reduction and weight maintenance for longer period of time.

He further added that despite Acomplia causing anxiety and depression in certain patients with depression, its lack of disturbing GI side effects is a welcome difference for patients who have taken Xenical.

However, Acomplia will too have stiff competition from Arena Pharmaceutical's Lorcaserin (APD356) and Alizyme's Cetilistat (ATL-962) that are not that much popular said the report.

Lorcaserin, which stimulates the 5-HT2C serotonin receptor, has a two-year phase 3 trial underway, which will have 3,000 overweight and obese patients participating in the US at around 100 centers.

While Alizyme, another drug that could give possible competition to Acomplia, is gearing up to launch phase III trials for Cetilistat.

According to DRI report, Lorcaserin will be launch in 2009 while Cetilistat will be launch in 2010.
