Viagra: the little blue pill28 March 2006 In the historic coastal town of Sandwich sprawls a factory which covers 340 acres of Kent and employs 3,600 people. It is in part a monument to the selling power of sex, for this is the UK headquarters of the company that makes Viagra, the little blue pill widely seen as the answer to men's sexual problems. It has been an incredibly successful product, transforming the profits of its manufacturer Pfizer, generating worldwide annual sales of nearly $2 billion and winning a reputation as the fastest-selling drug yet. Other drug companies, including Bayer and Eli Lilly, have now jumped on to the impotence bandwagon with their own solutions to the problem. Viagra still has the lion's share of the market and is used by 20 million men in 110 countries. However, Cialis is grabbing an impressive share, boasting 14 per cent of the UK market only months after its launch. Now, four years after its introduction, it is possible to get behind the headlines that proclaimed Viagra as the ultimate wonder drug for men and see what it will and won't do.
