Sanofi- Dealing with Stiff Competition in India from Three Acomplia Equivalents

Thu, 07 June 2007

It seems that Sanofi-Aventis’s acomplia still has to cross many barriers to make its way as three acomplia generics are giving tough competition to the anti-obesity drug in Indian market.

Acomplia generics launched by three Indian pharmaceuticals namely Sun Pharmaceuticals, Torrent Pharmaceutical and Zydus Cadila are making waves into the drug market and thus become a cause of worry for the anti-obesity drug.  Being recently launched, all three are benefiting from the fact that Indian legislation protects only those patents which are registered since 1995. And the patent for Acomplia's rimonabant molecule was indexed in 1994.

To deal with this stiff competition, Sanofi-Aventis is examining all available legal actions.
Meanwhile, Zydus is all set to introduce its generic equivalents in other countries wherein the legislation would not pose any hurdle in its way.

So far, Sanofi-Aventis has attained the FDA regulatory approval for Acomplia in many European countries and is waiting for the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval for sale in the U.S.
