“Viagra May Heal Heart Ailment” Claims Researchers

Tue, 24 July 2007

Viagra, turned into a panacea for erectile dysfunction, has now been found effective for the improvement of diseased right ventricles of the heart.

According to the hypothesis of researchers in Edmonton, Viagra could save millions of lives from a certain type of heart disorder.

The pill, now ingested by millions of men to treat erectile dysfunction, has shown notable results to advance performance of heart’s diseased right ventricles. Though therapies have been evolved to treat hitches in the left ventricle of the heart, which propels blood throughout the body, no treatments are available for the wellbeing of right side of the heart, which supplies blood only into the lungs.

"It is absolutely strange that medical science, despite being so advanced, has completely overlooked the right chambers," said Evangelos Michelakis, Canada Research Chair specialist in high blood pressure in the lung and a University of Alberta Hospital cardiologist.

When arteries of the lung contract, the blood pressure within goes up and  so lays a strain on the heart’s right ventricle. Consequently, patients feel lack of breath and fatigue and their probability of dying early then ascends.

In a study to be released next week in Circulation, a magazine of the American Heart Association, the University of Alberta Hospital researchers depict about the favorable effect of Viagra on the performance of right ventricle, which might add few more years to patients' lifespan.

The miracle pill Viagra acts by targeting an enzyme called phosphodiesterase Type 5, which is believed to constrict the lungs’ arteries and thus results breathing intricacies in addition to impotence. It is now established that by constricting enzyme, the performance of the right chambers of the heart can also be enhanced.

“When heart is in good shape, the enzyme is not found there but once it gets diseased, the enzymes can appear all of a sudden," said Jayan Nagendran, a cardiac surgery resident at the U of A.

By relaxing the lung’s arteries, Viagra, on the one hand, lowers the blood pressure and whereas on the other, offers a chance to the right chambers of the heart for fortification.
