Smoking death toll seen doubling by 2020

16 Feburary 2006

LONDON (Reuters) - Global annual deaths from smoking are expected to double to 10 million by 2020 but researchers said on Friday the real figure could be much higher.

The projection may be too low because an international survey of 13-15 year-olds has uncovered an unexpected rise in young female smokers, widespread exposure to second-hand smoke and the use of other tobacco products.

"The effect of tobacco use on worldwide deaths could be even greater than expected," said Dr Charles Warren, of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia. "Unless something is done ... it will lead to higher death rates," he told Reuters.

The Global Youth Tobacco Survey (GYTS) of 750,000 teenagers in 131 countries and the Gaza Strip and West Bank, which was implemented by Warren and his team, showed that nearly 9 percent of students smoked and 11 percent used other tobacco products such as chewing tobacco, cigars and water pipes with tobacco.
