Maxigra On The Market
Thu, 05 April 2007
Maxigra, a Polish generic equivalent of Viagra, went on sale in pharmacies on 28 March, Krzysztof Jakubiak, PR director at Polpharma, Maxigra’s manufacturer, confirmed to Pharma Poland News. Maxigra’s active ingredient is sildenafil, which is also the active ingredient in Viagra, owned by the world pharma giant Pfizer. However, Polpharma claims that the sildenafil in Maxigra was synthesized by a different method than Viagra, by Polish scientists at Instytut Farmaceutyczny in Warsaw. Maxigra was registered before Poland’s accession to the EU, when the data exclusivity period in Poland was three years, which has just expired in the case of Viagra. However, Pfizer argues that Viagra is covered by a 10-year data exclusivity period as an original preparation, on the grounds of the length of the data exclusivity period binding in the EU. The medicine was registered in the EU according to the central procedure in September 1998. Thus, Pfizer believes that no generic medicine registered on the base of Viagra’s original data may be traded in the EU until the protection period expires. Pfizer has already questioned Maxigra’s registration, but the suit was dismissed by the court for formal reasons, as presented in detail in Pharma Poland News of 22 March 2007. The cost of one Viagra pill is approx. PLN 25-30 (€6.5-8), while a package of eight Maxigra tablets costs PLN 35-40 (€9-10).
