U.S. Weight Loss Market To Reach $68 Billion By 2010

The U.S. weight loss market will continue to grow and will become a whopping $68.7 billion market by 2010, according to Marketdata Enterprises, Inc. The firm recently released a new 393-page study titled "The U.S. Weight Loss and Diet Control Market (9th edition)”, which is a complete analysis of the ten major segments of the U.S. diet industry. According to the firm, the U.S. weight loss market was worth $55.4 billion in 2006 and the market is expected to reach $58.7 billion by this year end. Retail meal replacements were hit hardest by the low-crab craze, but have bounced back from the slump. They earned around $1.17 billion in 2006. While over-the-counter (OTC) diet pills market is in doldrums as FTC fines market $25 million. According to the findings, in 2006, 68 percent patients had used diet program they could access from home, online and through phone. 56 percent people want plan based on regular food. Even surgeons involved in Bariatric surgery had great time in 2006 with 177,000 people opting for this surgery. This surgery is not covered by major insurance companies. Most obese Americans preferred Latin America for this surgery where the cost is substantially low. The firm said diet food home delivery has grown into an $800 million market segment. NutriSystem, Jenny Direct, Medifast and scores of other firms are credited for this success. Diet soft drinks, which were $19 billion industry in 2006, has risen to 29.5% and it is expected to rise to 31 percent in days ahead.
