Augmentin
Uses:
Amoxicillin/clavulanic acid treats a wide variety of bacterial infections.
How to Take:
Shake well before each dose. Take Augmentin as directed by your doctor,
usually every 8 or 12 hours. Augmentin should be taken with food. Antibiotics
work best when the amount of medicine in your body is kept at a constant
level. Therefore, take Augmentin at evenly spaced intervals. Continue
to take Augmentin until the full prescribed amount is finished even if
symptoms disappear after a few days. Stopping the medication too early
may allow bacteria to continue to grow, which may result in a relapse
of the infection.
Side Effects:
Augmentin may cause stomach upset, diarrhea, nausea, or vomiting during
the first few days as your body adjusts to the medication. If these effects
persist or worsen, contact your doctor promptly. Tell your doctor immediately
if you have any of these rare side effects: sore mouth, sore throat, fever,
easy bruising or bleeding. In the unlikely event you have an allergic
reaction to this drug, seek immediate medical attention. Symptoms of an
allergic reaction include: rash, hives, itching, swelling, trouble breathing.
Use of Augmentin for prolonged or repeated periods may result in a secondary
infection (e.g., oral or vaginal yeast infection). Contact your doctor
if you notice white patches in your mouth, a change in vaginal discharge
or other new symptoms. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact
your doctor or pharmacist.
Precautions:
Tell your doctor your medical history, especially of: blood disorders,
kidney problems, allergies to penicillin or other antibiotics. Before
using Augmentin, tell your doctor if you are pregnant. Augmentin passes
into breast milk and may have undesirable effects on a nursing infant.
Consult your doctor before breast-feeding.
Drug Interactions:
Tell your doctor of all prescription and nonprescription medications you
may take, especially of: probenecid, disulfiram, birth control pills,
tetracyclines. Augmentin may interfere with the effectiveness of birth
control pills. Discuss using other methods of birth control with your
doctor. This antibiotic may cause false positive results in diabetic urine
testing using Clinitest. Do not start or stop any medicine without doctor
or pharmacist approval.
Overdose:
If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or
emergency room immediately. Symptoms of overdose may include nausea, vomiting,
and diarrhea.
Notes:
Augmentin has been prescribed for your current condition only. Do not
use it later for another infection. A different medication may be necessary
in those cases. Do not share Augmentin with others.
Missed Dose:
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is near the
time of the next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your usual dosing
schedule. Do not double the dose to catch up.
Storage:
Refrigerate. The expiration date for Augmentin may vary depending on the
manufacturer. Consult your pharmacist.
